Title
Frith - Merddin Emrys at Tan y Bwlch Station with a Down train
Frith - Merddin Emrys at Tan y Bwlch Station with a Down train circa 1880. It is waiting to cross with the Up train. The locomotive is in original condition, note the semi-open cab and no sandpots at the bottom end. No 'barn' or Station House, which dates this photograph sometime between 1879 and 1883. The train consists of two Small Birmingham 4-wheelers, Bowsiders Nos 17 & 18, and a Curly Roofed Van (either No. 2 or 3).

Note the new lamp posts which have their lamps mounted on the side rather than on top. A horse-drawn wagonette awaits passengers besides the gated entrance to the old Roman road, bound for the Oakeley Arms Hotel. Beyond the station, Creuau Bank still retains a flight of stairs on the valley side.
