Title
Blaenau Ffestiniog GWR Exchange Station looking towards Duffws.
Blaenau Ffestiniog GWR Exchange looking towards Duffws. Probably taken circa 1946. Traffic from Duffws to the GWR yard would have to pass through the platform line seen here to access the weighbridge, then reverse into the yard on the right. Passenger or through trains from here would move onto the left hand line at the set of points still in situ at the end of the platform as they wouldn't have run over the weighbridge. The fact that this through route appears less overgrown than in other photographs, but with the run round loop clearly disused, suggests this photograph was taken within a year or two of line's closure. The FR was still operational, but only for goods. Later photographs during the lease period show the weighbridge route (used for access into both standard-gauge yards) less overgrown than seen here, whilst the through route to Stesion Fain became completely disused.

On the right is the main GWR station, goods shed, and yard complex, with semaphore and disc signalling. The locomotive coupled to the carriages in the loop is likely a GWR 5700 Class 0-6-0 pannier tank, although alternatively it could be a 48xx Class 0-4-2T or even a 455 Class 'Metro Tank' 2-4-0T. The carriages likely comprise the 'workmen's set' that ran between Blaenau and Trawsfynydd. This working had run since the opening of the Bala branch and the carriages, of varying types over the years, were always stabled on one of the loops between platform and goods shed during the day. Note the yard crane on the far right and Queen's Hotel in the background beyond the station.
