Title
Minffordd Yard Coal Hole.
Minffordd Yard Coal Hole, 1961. Despite being coal waggons, by 1961 the great majority of BR coal wagons were steel 16-tonners and older wooden waggons, such as these, were increasingly used for residual rough traffic - e.g. spent ballast. The FR waggons loaded with ballast support this theory. However the rake below the chute looks like it could be expecting coal. This rake comprises old FR wooden 2-ton coal waggon No. 162 (historic number 19), then Cleminson No. 8, ex-Smiths WD type D Bocoal No. 61, and a steel bodied granite waggon (converted from 3-ton slate). The other rake (loaded with spent ballast) comprises more granite waggons, old FR wooden coal waggons Nos 165 & 163 (historic numbers 22 & 20), and granite side tipper waggons 17 & 18 (subsequently 160 & 161, historic numbers 848 & 830).
