James Spooner on the Cob, Summer 1887. The photographer is stood at the station throat at Porthmadog Harbour. This classic view records the locomotive during its final years in service with its original parallel boiler, long low-slung water tanks, and stovepipe chimneys. Whilst it has been fitted with a cab the overall profile differs greatly to the two Boston Lodge built engines photographed at the same. The locomotive's subsequent rebuild would result in an appearance much more in keeping with the house style that had gradually developed.
Design details include painted dome covers, garter crests, and large cast smokebox number plates. The regulators are still fitted with the synchronised handwheel which in practice proved more trouble than it was worth, as it often made sense to adjust each engine individually.
