The Glanypwll area of Blaenau Ffestiniog taken from Llechwedd Quarry circa 1878 - 1897. In the foreground is the Baltic Hotel, the large building right centre is Rhiw Chapel and behind it is the original layout of the Ffestiniog Railway Dinas Junction, before a triangle was built here in circa 1880.
The edge of Glan y Don tip encroaches from the right. A horse-drawn trolley loaded with barrels stands on the junction between the main road over the Crimea Pass (today the A470) and Glan y Pwll Road.
On the right in the middle distance is Dinas Junction. The double semaphore signal can be glimpsed in front of the white Groesffordd Cottages below Craig Nyth y Gigfran. The Dinas Branch continues north out of shot, whilst the mainline curves to the east towards Glan y Pwll crossing, the gates of which can be seen on the Glan y Pwll Road.
In the background over the top of Oakeley Hospital, the foundations are being built for Glan y Pwll School. Beneath it, the disc signal for Glan y Pwll crossing (set at danger) can be seen on the Ffestiniog line to Duffws. The start of the LNWR route construction is also visible behind Capel Rhiw (middle right) and in front of the Ffestiniog (middle left).
In the far distance, the railway snakes its way towards Groesffordd, Bodychain, and Tanygrisiau. Capel Bethel can just be glimpsed on the edge of sight.
