Title
Small Birmingham No. 11.
Date
02/08/1939
Semi-open Small Birmingham 4-wheeler carriage No. 11 at Porthmadog Harbour Station on a wet 2 August 1939. The other Birmingham on the left is 3rd class matchboard No. 4 or 5.

p457. This and it's sister, No. 12, were conversions of the fully open 'flying bench' carriages. When first rebuilt at the turn of the century they were fully glazed and must have been like greenhouses on sunny days. The characteristic 'portholes' in the ends, unique to this pair, may have been provided for ventilation. Notice also, in this and the companion view of Ashbury No. 22 (visible to the right) the crude electrical connections on the ends of the carriages; they were joined by porcelain connectors and carried power (?!) from an accumulator in the guard's van (Bogie Van No. 2 on this occasion).
