Moelwyn on the Mineral Line at Minffordd circa 1956. The locomotive has been turned, and is still running as an 0-4-0. The large handrail on the front of the locomotive shows that it is running with the newly fitted four-speed Meadows gearbox and Gardner 3LW diesel engine. The driver is probably Allan Garraway, with Martin Lee stood next to him in the cab. This photograph gives a good view of Moelwyn before the original frames were replaced with the pony truck. The wide buffer beam and mud guards give the locomotive a very solid profile. Old double-balcony Brake Van No. 1 is coupled at the cab end to steady the riding. A Hudson flat waggon (ex-Toastrack bogie carriage underframe) loaded with sleepers and slate waggons make up the rest of the train. The bright rails on the mainline indicate that services have resumed to Minffordd Station by this time.
This unusual view (the photographer is stood on the mainline) shows Weighbridge Crossing, and in the background, the large mature oaks that today grow beside the volunteer hostel. In the far distance can be glimpsed the Cambrian signal box controlling access to the yard exchange sidings.
