Title
Boston Lodge Engine Shed Workshop Staff.
Boston Lodge Engine Shed Workshop Staff circa 1898. This shows the extend of the fitting shop that once existed at the far end of the long engine shed, well away from what later became the main Works. The line shafts are being driven by the stationary steam engine in the right-hand corner. Below the clock hangs the bell from Little Wonder.

From left to right the staff are:

William M. Phillips (fitter)
William Cunningham (fitter)
Hugh Hughes (fitter, subsequently works foreman)
William G. Williams (locomotive department foreman)
Robert Williams (fitter)
Boiler Boy
John Jeffrey Roberts (fitter)
William Evans (driver)

The machine in the foreground is from Sterne and Co. Glasgow. The belt driving it must have been particularly hazardous for the men and a protective railing has been emplaced to try and protect against accidents. Note the extensive Manchester Steam Users Association Instructions to Boiler Attendants mounted above the fireplace.
