Boston Lodge Bottom Yard.

Boston Lodge Bottom Yard, September 1940. The amount of rolling stock clogging the works is evidence of just how much the railway had reduced operations following the outbreak of war, with no passenger traffic, and even the goods reduced to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday only. Huge amounts of rolling stock were surplus to requirements.

From left to right are the cab and tanks of Moel Tryfan in the foreground, a wooden 4-ton coal waggon, the Hearse Van, and Ashbury bogie carriage No. 21 on the leftmost road. The longer rake of rolling stock in the middle of the shot includes more coal waggons, a large covered goods van, a damaged mk3 quarrymen's carriage, and slate waggons. The example closest to the photographer is historically important. The cross hatched end is very unusual for an FR vehicle. It is suspected that the first iron slate waggons were built with this type of end before they ended up with the middle angle iron rail that all surviving FR 2-ton slate waggons carry.

In the background on 1-Road is the rear bogie and bunker of Moel Tryfan. On 2-Road is a covered goods van with hinged end doors, a flat waggon (ex-Hudson Toastrack carriage), and the large ex-WD rail-mounted breakdown crane. On the far right are more goods vehicles on 3-Road, including more slates and probably an iron 3-ton coal waggon.
