Pont y Gelli under repair during 1877/8. Comparison with iBase 5499 reveals that the longer, thinner, timber from the hillside has been used to brace the overhanging parapet. Midway along the second span from the Blaenau end, behind the barn, there is a crude ladder for the carpenters to gain access from below, together with a block and tackle employed as a hoist; a timber can be seen, suspended in mid-air. Other interesting details are the use of substantial longitudinal sleepers to carry the rails on the viaduct. The number of men in the gang suggests that the job has been let as a contract.
