Boston Lodge Works pre-preservation from the Alan Pegler Collection.
This photograph shows Boston Lodge Works Bottom Yard as it looked when the preservationists first arrived. John Bate and Bill Harvey are examining the remains of one of the Fairbanks Morse petrol speeders on 3-Road. There seem to be three people - two wearing flat hats and one with a beret. Presumably the beret wearer is John Bate, a young man at the time. The other man is probably Morris Jones, the old company leading chargehand and Acting Locomotive Superintendent & Works Manager. Together with Allan Garraway and Alan Pegler, on 20 September 1954 they entered Boston Lodge to get the preservation era under way. This photograph is probably from that historic visit, during which the Simplex Mary Ann was brought back to life and run across the Cob to get petrol from the Shell garage.
Another possible date for the photo is 10 July 1954 for in "Tales of Pendre Sidings" John Bate recalled "On 10 July I travelled via the Festiniog Railway where things were beginning to happen and looked round Boston Lodge with Allan Garraway and others.." (page 51). He seems to have visited the FR again later in the year (Page 53).
From left to right: wooden 2-ton slate waggon off rails, cab and side tanks of Moel Tryfan, Hearse Van and Ashbury No. 21 far left. Brown Marshalls bogie carriage No. 16 and Bowsider No. 19 straight ahead. Moel Tryfan's rear bogie and bunker are hidden out of site behind these vehicles. Carriage No. 15, mk3 Quarrymen's Carriage No. 8, and Covered Goods Van No. 116 are parked on 2-Road. The weed killer-waggon can be glimpsed in front of the Erecting Shop.
