File metadata
Crossley Engine at Boston Lodge Works, July 1959. It was positioned at the southern end of the Erecting Shop (subsequently 4-Road). This hot bulb diesel engine was used to drive the line shafting for the machines.
It was the position of this engine within the Erecting Shop that gave rise to the term ''Engine Side' whilst the clock in the lobby for signing on for work gave rise to 'Clock Side'. These terms are still used to differentiate the two sides of the railway or any vehicle on it.
