Minffordd Exchange Sidings and Cambrian Station.

Minffordd Yard Exchange Sidings and Cambrian Station, 1930. Pre-grouping waggons on the exchange siding several years after grouping. The two GWR waggons obviously remained with their original owner. The G&SW (Glasgow and South Western Railway) was incorporated into the LMS, whilst the NE (North Eastern Railway) was incorporated into the LNER. All of these waggons were subject to the common user agreement which allowed all waggons under the 'Big Four' to move around freely over the network without the need for transfer. The slate waggons seen in the foreground will be unloaded onto the wharf. Once sold, the slate would then be reloaded onto standard-gauge waggons. The stacking area that the wharves provided were of great value. Peaks in production and demand varied, and the wharves were a reservoir to smooth out the differences. The large stockpile see here could indicate that demand was low at this time. The tender locomotive shunting the yard on the far left is probably a Cambrian Railways Jones Class 89 0-6-0.
