Blaenau Ffestiniog ex-GWR Yard, 24 January 1961. This scene shows the transhipment siding between the standard-gauge on the right and the narrow-gauge on the left. The man in the apron is one of the slate loaders, the apron protecting his clothes from the sharp edges of slates as he lifts them from the waggons for transfer. Going by the name of George, he was apparently a quarry employee sent down to help with the loading. The row of houses in the distance with the gap in them is The Square (or Newmarket Square). This scene would soon vanish into history as the GWR route to Bala was it its last months of operation when this photograph was taken. Passenger services had already ceased the year before.
