Title
The Princess on Tanygrisiau Embankment with a Down train.
The Princess and Down train on Tanygrisiau Embankment circa 1871. This remarkable scene captures what was almost certainly a Special train, given that the same formation is seen the other photograph taken from a higher viewpoint. The sentry box brake van is followed by one of the 1st class Small Birmingham 4-wheelers, two 3rd class carriages, a 3rd class Ashbury, and either an open quarrymen's carriage or the private Oakeley open carriage at the rear. The large waterwheel serves the iron foundry. The large culvert at the base of the dry-stone embankment carries the Afon Cwmorthin beneath the railway.
