Merddin Emrys undergoing steam test in Boston Lodge Bottom Yard, 21 August 1959. The boiler (newly overhauled by Vulcan Foundry staff) and power bogies are parked on 2-Road outside the Erecting Shop. First steaming since closure. New tube plates, tubes, smokeboxes, chimneys fitted. Note how the locomotive still retains the riveted boiler cradle which would be replaced before the locomotive re-entered service. It would be almost two years before the rebuild was completed and the locomotive ready for traffic.
