Loading slates in Minffordd Yard, 1920. The men seen here are loading slates at the Llechwedd Wharf, with the GWR waggon sat in the sunken road to allow for easier transfer. In the foreground iron 2-ton slate waggons Nos 585 (with FRCo lettering) & 708 are well loaded with finishes slates. Note the difference between the single piece cast axle boxes and cruciform wheels on No. 585 and the two piece bolted boxes (which allowed waggons to be lifted from their wheels by unbolting the bottom keeps only) and disc wheels on No. 708. The slate waggon just visible on the right of shot is wooden.
The central bar on the GWR waggon being loaded allowed for tarpaulin to be fitted. On the other side of the Coal Hole towards the rear of shot are private owner waggons, including Pwllheli Granite (which owned Minffordd Quarry) and Broughton Colliery (which was the usual supplier of coal to the Ffestiniog).
