The ALCo Mountaineer on the Deviation below Barn Cutting. Convention Special to the head of steel, 5 November 1972. The second carriage is the brand new aluminium prototype No. 116, which entered traffic in October.

The track is of the semi-permanent way variety - i.e. 2nd hand chaired track. This was replaced within a few years but allowed occasional trains with steam locomotives to access the spiral. Note the Orientation Table atop the hillock and the gate across the line in front of the locomotive.
